Tanzania has been elected Chair of the African Group on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for a two-year term, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee currently underway in Busan, Republic of Korea.

In addition to chairing the African Group, Tanzania was also elected Vice-Chair of the World Heritage Committee, placing the country in a key leadership position within the decision-making framework of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

The election reflects the confidence African countries have placed in Tanzania for its contribution to building consensus, strengthening continental solidarity and promoting the conservation and sustainable management of World Heritage sites.

It also highlights Tanzania’s growing role in international diplomacy and its constructive engagement within UNESCO.

Through its new leadership role, Tanzania will coordinate the African Group’s positions on World Heritage matters, lead continental discussions and work closely with the World Heritage Centre, Advisory Bodies and other stakeholders to advance Africa’s interests and strengthen the protection of its heritage sites for present and future generations.

The election is regarded as an honour for the United Republic of Tanzania and further recognition of its growing role in global leadership, particularly in culture, heritage conservation and international cooperation.
