RESIDENTS of Katsunga village in Nsimbo District, Katavi Region, are living in fear after a hyena entered a family’s home during the night and snatched a one-year-old child before dragging the victim into nearby thicket where the child was later found dead.

The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday after a family celebration had ended and guests had dispersed, according to eyewitnesses.

Daudi Paskal, one of the residents who responded to the call, said they had just returned home from the celebration when they received a telephone call informing them that a hyena had taken the child.

“We had all left after the celebration and returned to our homes. At around 10 p.m., we received a call informing us that a hyena had entered the house and taken the child,” he said.

Another resident, Fredrick Chrispin, said the child’s mother had kept the baby inside the house before stepping outside briefly to hang clothes.

“It was during that short time that the hyena entered the house, grabbed the child and ran into the bush. We followed its tracks and eventually found the child with severe head injuries. The hyena later reappeared and charged at the people who were pursuing it,” he said.

Chrispin added that the animal had previously been seen entering the village to prey on livestock, but on the night of the incident it is believed to have attacked the child after failing to find animals.

The child’s father, Evodius Fanuel, said he was away from home when he received the distressing phone call.

“I was informed that a hyena had entered my house and taken my child. When I arrived, villagers had already organised a search,” he said.

Mpanda Municipal Hospital medical officer-in-charge, Dr Limbu Mazoya, confirmed that the hospital had received the child’s body.

He said preliminary medical examinations revealed severe head injuries and other wounds consistent with an attack by a wild animal.

Following the incident, residents have appealed to the government and wildlife authorities to take urgent measures to control hyenas straying into human settlements, saying the attacks have left the community living in constant fear.
